Before becoming an Italophile, Mitchell spent 25 years as the creative director and executive vice president of a women’s clothing company. Yearly trips to the fashion centers of Milan, Florence, and Rome turned into a gastronomic habit. When he left the fashion biz, he longed to find the same quality of no-nonsense Italian food in New York. He returned to Italy, and began exploring its less-traveled corners – those that hold the secret to tomato sauce layered with mysteriously deep flavors, and ravioli con funghi as richly satisfying as a veal Milanese. He partnered with chef and restaurateur Paolo Lattanzi to develop a New York City restaurant with a menu that Mitchell describes as “a tour of Italy.”
“Jay Mitchell has created a restaurant that delivers rustic Italian cuisine directly influenced by his scores of visits to Italy as well as the Italian-influenced south of France,” wrote Alexandra Chang of AM New York. With dishes like Roman-style baby artichokes, a long list of Italian wines by the glass, gelato and sorbetto flown in daily from Milan, and exceptional housemade biscotti, Mitchell does everything in his power to make sure that this is not only the Italian restaurant of his dreams, but also of yours.
