Indian is my favorite type of food & Jackson's Diner is hands down my favorite place in NYC for Indian food. The keema naan, chicken tikka masala and spinach sag are my personal "must try" dishes!

The name "Jackson Diner" threw me off, because it seemed totally out of context for an Indian restaurant. They are in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Spice, which was one of my neighborhood faves. After calling to inquire about the unusual name (turns out they're a sister restaurant of the Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights) I took a chance and placed an order. They are now my new favorite neighborhood Indian restaurant. A little pricey, but the portions are generously sized, and oh-so-flavorful. They don't dumb down the spice for white peoples' palates like others do. My favorites are either of the tandoori mixed grills (one includes lamb and seafood, the other is 2 types of chicken and seekh kebab), the lamb biryani, and the samosa chat, which is a samosa cut in half and smothered in a raita-like sauce with chickpeas and stuff. It's delicious. The part that I'm most amazed by is how tender and juicy their tandoori meats are. They even reheat well in the microwave. These Jackson people know what they're doing. Kudos!

For Indian food in NYC, you could do worse than Jackson Diner. You could also do better, though! I ordered the Mulligatawny soup, which always tastes different from restaurant to restaurant, depending on the region the restaurant identifies with. Jackson Diner's was a strange, uber-milky, al dente rice-filled muck that was so mildly seasoned, you felt like you were drinking the remnants of some other soup. Not great. I also got the chicken tikka. The spices were definitely on point, but the meat itself was touch-and-go, meaning one piece would be overcooked, another under, and the next near-perfect. No fun! I would only eat here again if I was in the neighborhood and absolutely NEEDED Indian (but I wouldn't re-order either of the above dishes!).

So my experience with delivery with the Jackson diner was both great and terrible. First I placed an order for 1 Kachori Chat (based on another reviewer's recommendation), 1 Nan, 1 Cucumber Raita, 1 Broccoli Masala. The delivery confirmation said it would take 30-45 minutes, and because I live only a 3 blocks away I thought 40 minutes for 1 entrée, 1 bread, and 1 appetizer was more than reasonable. The order took over an hour. It also cost much more than I would have paid for at Baluci's delivering from 3rd ave, but nevertheless, the food came. The Broccoli Masala is not creamy like others I have had. For someone who likes more mild/less traditional tastes it might be a nice dish. The vegetables in it were hearty and I didn't really mind the broth-like consistency of the Masala. The Briyandi was savory and complemented the broccoli well. The Kachori Chat, on the other hand, was not so well received. It was the first thing I opened and immediately I felt that something went wrong. I noticed that within the plastic cover 5 of the 6 puff-pastry shells oddly resembled the kinds in the frozen foods section at the supermarket. Only one of the six looked hand prepared and resembled as it should. As I ate it, I noticed the filling was a delicious blend of creamy yogurt, chickpeas, tomatoes, and spices, but the outside was soft and didn't seem to hold up well in the short travel. The other five, which looked commercial were just not appealing at all. I wonder if they had to go buy these types of pastry shells because they ran out of the kind they normally make. But nevertheless, the thin shells were soggy, doughy, and unable to hold the filling I actually liked. This was a huge disappointment because I really couldn't eat them. Aside from this, the nan was good and the raita was delicious. The raita comes in a 3/4 cup contain which is why it's two dollars. I could eat it by the spoonfuls. Again, I wonder what happened with the Kachori Chat and the lengthy delivery. I may try eating inside this place one more time because

Jackson diner is fabulous. I've eaten in and gotten take out many times- the food has always been fresh and delicious. I particularly like the sag tofu and roti. The cucumber raita is a good addition for dipping the roti or mixing with rice. For appetizers, I would recommend the samosas and wings. Overall, great food!

Name is misleading, but really good, authentic Indian food. I enjoy the Tofu Masala every time I order it. Good portion sizes.

delivery: - my order took 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive, I live 2 avenues away from the restaurant - the food was luke warm upon arrival Food: I ordered the lamb curry, broccoli masala, and 1 roti I asked for the lamb curry to be prepared extra spicy. The curry had little to no flavor. The lamb tasted the same as the curry, little to no flavor. The broccoli masala was pretty good but not amazing. The portions of the entrees are very small. I may give the restaurant one more chance as a dine in patron, but do not intend on ordering delivery again in the future.
