Among my favorite restaurants in Chicago - I have never had a bad dish! The Bolani Gandana with scallions is absolutely delicious, especially with the yogurt mint sauce. The Mantoo are also wonderful, a little bit like a middle eastern version of ravioli. Portions are fairly large, so any dish is great to share or spread across multiple meals.

I don't know what Afghan food is supposed to taste like, so I can't say how authentic what we had was. But we really liked what we ordered. Never having tasted Afghan before, we ordered the Kabuli Palau and the Mantoo from the traditional Afghan dishes section. The palau was yummy and, spice-wise, very similar to what you'd expect from a rice dish from the region. However, I liked it more than the average Indian/Pakistani pulau for two reasons. One, the lamb was very tender, thinly sliced and, above all, abundant. Two, the dish was not at all greasy - it was very satisfying taste-wise but it barely left an oily trace on my plate. I'm not a particularly health-conscious individual when it comes to food (I've suffered though many an oily Indian dish just for the flavor) so I was pleasantly surprised by the full flavor of this dish despite the sparing use of grease. The Mantoo were very tasty too, although I'm partial to the Turkish manti (the very tiny version of these dumplings). The dough was soft, the meat filling was very tasty, and the addition of chickpeas to the yogurt sauce was an unexpected yet very welcome addition. I would give this place 5 stars but for the salt. In both dishes, the salt was too much, particularly in the mantoo. Why ruin that wonderful flavor...
