I happened upon this restaurant several years ago and have eaten here off and on ever since. This is the only Afghan restaurant that I have ever been to though I would say the cuisine is very similar to Persian- that is to say, middle eastern flavors such as saffron and rose water, though not overly spicy. Over all, I would say it's one of the better middle eastern restaurants in its neighbourhood and the portions are generous for the prices. The kabobs and lamb dishes I've had have all been quite good though one of my favorite dishes is the pumpkin turnovers.

First of all, I was pleasantly surprised when, in the middle of a pouring rainstorm, the food came to me a full half hour earlier than the confirmation email said it would. I didn't know who was at the door, they were so fast! On a whole, the food was really awesome. I totally over ordered -- I thought that a couple of appetizers and an entree would be a good meal because I hadn't eaten all day, but the portions of the appetizers were so enormous that I put my whole entree into the fridge for tomorrow. I had to deduct a star, however, because I ordered the "sambusas" - the fried meat patties - which were just thin, chewy, overcooked triangles of greasy wonton wrappers with absolutely no filling. Those I had to throw out -- they were so horrendous that it was as though they came from a different restaurant entirely. But I would order everything else again, and I'd recommend it. I could even potentially see myself having a craving for a couple of these dishes sometime...

I have never written a review but I had to say something here. Khyber Pass has the worst Persian/Afghan food I have ever tasted in my entire life. All the khoresh (stews) I ordered were disgusting and watery. The bread was not fresh and rice was pathetic. I had a friend over who had never tried Persian/Afghan cuisine so ordered from here b/c it was so close - I was so embarrassed. I threw the whole thing out and took him for sushi. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

0 stars, terrible delivery, they can't keep their vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes that have similar names straight. AVOID!

The delivery was on time, and the kebabs I ordered were pretty good. The rice was much better this time.

Khyber Pass is one of my "go to" kebab places in the East Village and it never fails to disappoint. I've had their Morgh, Koobideh, Sultan-e-kebab and many others and they're all good. It's a bit pricey, but it's pretty comparable to neighboring kebab joints and the food is much better. Make sure to ask or yogurt sauce since they don't give any by default.

They took an HOUR AND A HALF to deliver my food. It was cold and ruined when it arrived. I will NEVER order from here again.

Wow! Outstanding! I ordered the Barg: (Tender pieces of fillet mignon, marinated with saffron and other spices) It was amazing! You can taste that authentic grilled flavor and the spices are excellent! Plus order the orange rice! It was fantastic what a twist. This dish is a great value. I was very happy with the meat portions for 13.95. Bravo Khyber. I am going to order the same thing tonight!
